Optiroll Blue

As insects are living organisms they are very susceptible to slight environmental changes and so control strategies that work in one greenhouse may not work so well in another. In collaboration with various growers in different climates and industries, Russell IPM has developed 3 core products in the Optiroll range that are each suited to the array of environments most commonly found to host thrips species.

Thrips are capable of causing severe damage to a range of crops. To combat this economically important pest Russell IPM have developed three key products that utilise a scientifically optimised blue wavelength. Find out more below.

Chemical Control

The use of pesticides is no longer recommended due to the increasing resistance and the concealed locations thrips most commonly inhabit within the plant making pesticide reach difficult.

Biorational Control

Biorational and organic means of thrips control are resulting in the most promising management of thrips in greenhouses. Use of sticky traps in conjunction with predatory mites have proved effective in bringing western flower thrips under control. This strategy has shown increased financial returns with the added benefit of reducing pesticide use. Each glasshouse has a diverse range of crops, microclimates and other ecological conditions that result in a unique ecosystem. Optiroll Blue

In collaboration with Keele University, trials were conducted to determine the most attractive wavelength of colour for thrips capture. Western flower thrips were found to be most attracted to the wavelength labelled ‘Blue 4’ with varying degrees of attraction to other trap colours. Russell IPM now incorporate this particular wavelength of colour in each of its blue Optiroll products to ensure maximum trap catch.
